Assessing the Association of Indoor Air Pollution with Tuberculosis in Adult Women and Children under 5 Years of Age

This study is conducted the Cohort for Tuberculosis Research by the Indo-US Medical Partnership (C-TRIUMPH) under the Regional Prospective Observational Research for Tuberculosis (RePORT) Network, an international TB consortium. 



 



Addressing social and environmental risk factors contributing to TB disease is becoming increasingly important for national TB programs. We are leveraging the pediatric participants in 1,100 homes participating in the C-TRIUMPH study, enhancing data collection regarding household and individual exposure to indoor air pollution (IAP), and providing the strongest evidence to date addressing the impact of IAP and pediatric TB.



 



The specific aims of this study are to 1) estimate the impact of exposure to IAP from burning solid fuels, kerosene, and/or secondhand smoke on incident TB infection and active TB disease in children, 2) estimate the impact of exposure to IAP from burning solid fuels, kerosene, and/or secondhand smoke on household burden of pediatric TB infection and disease in homes with an adult case of active pulmonary TB, and 3) study the impact of IAP on immune responses and to determine immunologic predictors of TB disease progression among children with TB infection.
