Field Study In India: Field Placement Expectations & Requirements


CONDUCT



It is important to remember that you are a guest and a junior researcher. BJGMC faculty are your mentors and supervisors. They are experts who partner with Johns Hopkins faculty, and they share their facility, expertise, and time with Johns Hopkins visiting researchers. Engage with BJGMC faculty, consult them for guidance, and listen to them.



 



BACKGROUND READING MATERIALS



Required Reading List.

Contact your U.S.-based advisor and ask if there are specific protocols, papers, etc. that you should read up on prior to your trip.



 



FIRST WEEK



  • Pick up ID badge from Manisha Mhaske—it must be worn at all times on the BJGMC campus.


  • Meet with Dr. Patil and Dr. Joshi (if available/needed) to review work scope and make any needed changes.


  • Meet with on-site mentor(s). Many BJGMC faculty are part of the on-site BJGMC-JHU Fogarty HIV-TB Training Program, and have been trained specifically in mentoring young investigators. As appropriate, each student should be assigned to a Fogarty scholar who can advise on the project and serve as a mentor in other capacities. Fogarty administrators will document and track these relationships as a way to bolster the program.  If it is not appropriate for a Fogarty scholar to be a mentor to the student, the BJGMC administrators can work with the research project PIs to identify other faculty who can fill this role.



 



DURING YOUR STAY



  • Participate in Weekly Research Meeting Calls convened by Amita Gupta Wednesdays at 11:00 am EST (join by Skype or Adobe connect).


  • Keep notes regarding your work and life experiences for your Field Report, which is due upon return to the US.


  • Meet with mentors regularly to formally present your accomplishments.



 



BEFORE YOU LEAVE, WRITE SUMMARY, MEET WITH YOUR ON-SITE MENTOR



  • Prepare and submit a 1-page (maximum) report summarizing your visit and work accomplished. Submit your report to your on-site mentor, Manisha Mhaske, and Dr. Sandesh Patil. 


  • Work with your on-site mentor and Manisha Mhaske to schedule a meeting with BJGMC Faculty and clinical research site leadership to formally present your summary report. This meeting should take place on your last day. 


  • Review what is remaining to do after you leave, and identify personnel who will complete this work.


  • Schedule regular Skype meetings, as needed, to coordinate about the status of your study when you are back in the U.S.



 



WHEN YOU RETURN



  • Submit a Field Report.


  • Complete the Post Field Study Survey.
