Summary:

Since 2004, the National AIDS Control Program of India has been rolling out free antiretroviral therapy. Byramjee Jeejeebhoy Government Medical College (BJGMC), located in Pune, India, is now the largest HIV clinic in India, with over 26,000 adult and pediatric patients registered since 2005. We specifically propose aims and analyses that will be relevant to India’s HIV epidemic with particular attention to TB and non-communicable diseases co-morbidities. Our specific aims are:

Aim1. To establish an observational cohort database for research that has public sector HIV data which could be used by BJMC investigators and our Indo-US collaborators to inform India’s national program and shape future research

Aim 2. To examine the natural history of HIV, HIV-related comorbidities (i.e. TB, diabetes, alcoholism, malnutrition, cardiovascular disease) and outcomes of their treatment over time in a public sector clinic in India

In conjunction with the regional consortium’s goal to build local in-country research capacity focused on HIV epidemiology, we will also leverage our recently awarded Fogarty TB/HIV training grant and ongoing HIV studies to enhance research capacity at BJMC.
