Overview:
Dr. Chhaya Valvi has completed her undergraduate and postgraduate medical education from the premier institute of Seth G.S. Medical College, Mumbai, India. She was awarded the prestigious Dr. Palekar prize as she ranked first among the candidates for M.D. exam.
Dr. Chhaya is presently working as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Pediatrics, Byramjee Jeejeebhoy Government Medical College (B.J.G.M.C.) and Sassoon General Hospital (SGH), Pune, India. She is In charge of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), High Dependency Unit (HDU) and Deputy In charge of the Human Milk Bank (HMB). She has 16 publications in National and International Journals.
Dr. Chhaya believes for successful treatment outcome in tuberculosis the co-morbid conditions need to be addressed with dedication. As part of the BJGMC JHU Fogarty training program in HIV-TB she is interested in researching on the complex relationship between tuberculosis and malnutrition. Research with the endpoint of successful nutritional intervention for prevention of TB, which is one of the key tools, can be formulated where both Tuberculosis and Malnutrition are like double edged sword in developing countries. Nutritional intervention based approach may help in improving the treatment outcome, adherence, relapse, mortality and emergence of MDR TB. Further whether macro and micronutrient intervention may prevent progression of Latent Tuberculosis to active TB is the topic she would like to research further with the availability of backup facility of Nutritional Rehabilitation Center and the dedicated Pediatric TB OPD facility available at SGH. Dr. Chhaya is part of a team who has developed an innovative tool “Barrier device for air borne diseases – mainly tuberculosis” (Provisional Patent registered.)
