As part of the BJGMC JHU Fogarty training program in HIV-TB she is interested in researching on the complex relationship between tuberculosis and malnutrition.  Research with the endpoint of successful nutritional intervention for prevention of TB, which is one of the key tools, can be formulated where both Tuberculosis and Malnutrition are like double edged sword in developing countries. Nutritional intervention based approach may help in improving the treatment outcome, adherence, relapse, mortality and emergence of MDR TB. Further whether macro and micronutrient intervention may prevent progression of Latent Tuberculosis to active TB is the topic she would like to research further with the availability of backup facility of Nutritional Rehabilitation Center and the dedicated Pediatric TB OPD facility available at SGH. Dr. Chhaya is part of a team who has developed an innovative tool “Barrier device for air borne diseases – mainly tuberculosis” (Provisional Patent registered.)

World Health Organization (WHO) recommends systematic screening of high-risk populations, including household contacts (HHCs) of adult pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) patients, as a key strategy for elimination of TB. QuantiFERON-TB Gold In-Tube (QFT-GIT) assay and tuberculin skin test (TST) are two commonly used tools for the detection of latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) but may yield differential results, affecting eligibility for TB preventive therapy.
